As Jim Hightower explains it, is that “the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans possess more net worth today than the bottom 90 percent of us combined. Worse, these privileged few and their political henchmen have structured a new economic ‘normal’ of long-term joblessness, low wages, no benefits or worker rights, miserly public services, and a steadily widening chasm between the rich and the rest of us.” We must restore sanity to this nation.

Last Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Dirty Air TRAIN Act – one of the worst environmental bills ever to pass either chamber of Congress.
And Congressional leaders have promised more attacks in the weeks to come!
We can't let this vote go by without letting our members of Congress know how we feel.
Together, let's make sure Congress knows we're paying attention, and that we expect them to protect our kids and communities by keeping our air clean.
This bill blocks life-saving clean air standards for mercury, smog, and other pollutants that have been in the works for decades. It is literally a Dirty Air Death Bill and will lead to about 125,000 premature deaths.
We are working closely with a broad community of environmental and public health organizations to make sure Congress is held fully accountable for this monstrous vote.
We will be running accountability ads in key districts, getting our message out in the press, and continuing to reach out to key swing votes both in the House and Senate to make sure they understand that putting polluter profits ahead of public health is a terrible idea.

the Arctic is on thin ice. And we need your help to fight back!

Dear Joe,
A startling new report reveals Arctic summer sea ice has hit near record lows. Walrus, polar bears, whales, and seals are in danger. Yet our government has bowed to polluting industries and approved air pollution permits for a drilling rig and the first of several aggressive offshore oil drilling plans in the already vulnerable region.
There's no doubt about it: the Arctic is on thin ice. And we need your help to fight back!
With your support we will fight tirelessly against:
  • Dangerous exploration activities that create noise and disturbances so pervasive that scientists conclude they could be the "greatest long-term threat to the Arctic's biological richness"
  • Faulty oil spill plans that rely on defective cleanup equipment and inadequate resources to cleanup a spill
  • Oil drilling lease sales that are conducted before the impact of drilling in the Arctic is understood and adequate environmental protection plans are in place
  • The approval of drilling plans without a full environmental review
  • Inadequate air pollution permits for drilling operations in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas that fail to control harmful pollutants
The Obama administration has failed Americans by caving to industry pressure and approving the first part of the most aggressive offshore drilling plan ever proposed in the Arctic—without a full environmental review, and without requiring reliable safety equipment or an approved oil spill response plan. And more decisions on key permits required before drilling can commence are expected soon.
Ships involved in the drilling will release tens of thousands of tons of harmful pollutants into the air, dump chemicals into the water, disturb threatened and endangered wildlife, and create the risk of a catastrophic oil spill.
It is times like these that Earthjustice's work is absolutely critical. Now more than ever, the earth needs a good lawyer.
I hope we can count on your support.
Sincerely,
Trip Van Noppen Trip Van Noppen

P.S. Earthjustice has held the line against irresponsible oil development in Arctic in the past. And, with your urgent support, we will succeed in defending this sensitive region yet again. Please make an urgent gift today.

If, as the US supreme court has found, corporations are 'people' shouldn't they be prosecuted for murder just as any other citizen would?

A mass murder has taken place in another American workplace, taking 29 lives. The authorities know who did it, so shouldn't that person be made to pay for this heinous crime?

Yes! But the killer is one of America's largest coal corporations, Massey Energy Company, and you can't give the death penalty to a corporation. Can you? Well, the Supreme Court has ruled that a corporation is a "person" – so why not?

House not the only place acting dirty - Senate cuts transparency projects:

It's unfortunate the Senate Appropriations Committee is trying to cut spending for transparency projects, some of which save the government millions of dollars a year and could easily pay for themselves, and even worse that it did so when it thought no one was looking. Ironically, at a time when Congress is scrounging for every last penny, both houses are about to underfund the very tools that will tell them how federal money is being spent.

Make no mistake, my friends, the tea party and republicans fully intend to bankrupt you and your family, your town, your country if that is what it takes to obtain a PERMANENT republican majority in government.  The wealthy industrialists who own the tea party and republicans have more money than a bull can shit, and the supremes have passed gas that money is speech and that corporations are people, thus money in politics is the name of the game.  We will try to compete with them, but, to me, the outlook truly does look bleak
