RETURNING VETERANS UNEMPLOYMENT RATE 27% WE CAN DO BETTER!

The stories many of our veterans tell me are heartbreaking.

I’ve heard from battlefield medics who heroically treated wounds in combat zones but then were denied jobs as EMTs after returning home and told they didn't have the right experience. 

Others have told me they won’t write “veteran” on their resume because they’re afraid of the stigma they think employers attach to their service.

I’ve simply heard from too many of our veterans who, despite being trained with the ultimate responsibility to protect our nation, can’t get a job once their enlistment is over. The unemployment rate for these young heroes is 27% -- more than one out of every four.

It’s unconscionable, and we can’t let it continue.

That’s why I’ve just introduced the Hiring Heroes Act –- and why I’d like you to click here to sign on as a citizen cosponsor today.

The Hiring Heroes Act will help our men and women in uniform take full advantage of the skills and experience they gain serving our nation by providing job training to every returning service member.

It will ensure broad skills training for every service member as they leave the military. And require the Department of Labor to take a look at how to make sure military skills and training are translatable into civilian careers so veterans don't have to jump through hoops to get job certifications.

And, bottom line, it will help tens of thousands of our brave veterans -- people who have sacrificed so much for us -- find work and provide for their families when they return home.

A few months ago, I asked our PattyMurray.com community what more we could all do to better serve our veterans and military retirees.
