"Act Now or Forget About Health Care Reform

Act now or forget about health care reform. It really is as simple as that. The American people need to make their voices heard on this subject and they need to do it now. When Congress returns from the August recess it will either pass historic health care reform legislation or it will send that legislation to the dustbins of history. What the Congress does is largely up to what they hear from their constituents during the recess.

The August recess was supposed to be a time for members of Congress to reach out to their constituents and find out what they think and what they want in meaningful health care reform. Local town hall forums were the venue of choice to have this conversation. However, those who oppose health care reform have effectively used anarchist tactics to close off any such dialogue. Rather than have a civil discussion on the merits of the proposed legislation, they choose to disrupt and prevent any conversation at all. The result is that many members of Congress have canceled planned town hall meetings. Not allowing the conversation to take place is inherently wrong and is contrary to the principles on which this nation was founded.

The American people can not allow the anarchists to cut off the conversation. Fortunately there are other things that the public can do to to make their voices heard.

First, Americans can send a quick email (copy and paste this if you like) to their lawmakers, identifying themselves as a registered voter and one of the lawmaker's constituents, and briefly state their support for H.R. 3200. Any issues with the proposed legislation can also be briefly addressed. It doesn't take a lot of time or effort but it is extremely important.

Contact U.S. Senators:

Second, send a brief email to family and friends and encourage them to make their views known to their lawmakers. Include the two links above in the email so that it will be easy for the recipient to contact their lawmakers. Ask them to forward the email to their family and friends as well.

Third, go to the Open Congress website, register, and go to the H.R. 3200 page and click on the "I Support This Bill" button. Currently, only 16% of registered users have expressed support for the bill. As more of the myths, lies, and distortions are debunked, th is number should significantly rise. The Open Congress website is a great resource and also includes a link to write to representatives for those who are registered at the site.

The bottom line is that the American people can influence what happens to meaningful health care reform. If they sit back and do nothing, then chances are that nothing will happen. This may well be the best chance, and probably the last chance, for the United States to enact true health care reform. But it won't happen if the public doesn't make their views known to their lawmakers." LINK

As Jim Hightower explains it, is that “the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans possess more net worth today than the bottom 90 percent of us combined. Worse, these privileged few and their political henchmen have structured a new economic ‘normal’ of long-term joblessness, low wages, no benefits or worker rights, miserly public services, and a steadily widening chasm between the rich and the rest of us.” We must restore sanity to this nation.
