By Tom Engelhardt TOM DISPATCH:
"...Stanley McChrystal is the general from the dark side (and proud of it). So the recent sacking of Afghan commander General David McKiernan after less than a year in the field and McChrystal's appointment as the man to run the Afghan War seems to signal that the Obama administration is going for broke. It's heading straight into what, in the Vietnam era, was known as "the big muddy."
...For those old enough to remember, we've been here before. Administrations that start down a path of expansion in such a war find themselves strangely locked in -- psychically, if nothing else -- if things don't work out as expected and the situation continues to deteriorate. In Vietnam, the result was escalation without end. President Obama and his foreign policy team now seem locked into an expanding war..."
TO UNDERSTND OBAMA'S ESCALATION OF WHAT IS NOW HIS WAR ON AFGHANISTANIS AND PAKISTANIS IURGE YOU TO READ THIS POST AT TOMGRAM NOW.
I, for one, remember well, in 1967 while young men were swept up by the draft and fed into the meat grinder known as VietNam, our leaders went on and on about the "greatness" of it. 550,000 known dead US military presonel, and certainly millions of innocents in S.E. Asia killed and maimed. Is this President Obama REALLY this stupid? He is employing the "best" of the Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld war machine residue. For someone who is supposedly an agent for change, it looks more and more like more and more of the same to this old veteran.
As Jim Hightower explains it, is that “the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans possess more net worth today than the bottom 90 percent of us combined. Worse, these privileged few and their political henchmen have structured a new economic ‘normal’ of long-term joblessness, low wages, no benefits or worker rights, miserly public services, and a steadily widening chasm between the rich and the rest of us.” We must restore sanity to this nation.
